D. C. Thomson is also behind the best-known comics in the country. The Dandy, first published in 1937, introduced instantly recognisable characters such as Korky the Cat and Desperate Dan, and the Beano, first published in 1938, with Dennis the Menace, The Bash Street Kids, Roger the Dodger, Minnie the Minx and Billy Whizz.

Other characters were added later (some from other comics), such as The Numskulls (originally published in the Beezer), Beryl the Peril (originally published in the Topper) and Bananaman. The last edition of The Dandy was published on 4 December 2012, the seventy-fifth birthday of the comic, but some characters still live on in the Beano, which continues to be printed and is now the longest-running British children’s comic. Some characters have gone on to be made into television cartoons, such as Dennis the Menace and Bananaman.

The success of D. C. Thomson is, at least in part, due to the ability of the company to adapt to the ever-changing demands of the consumers. As well as producing traditional newspapers and magazines, the company has kept up to date with current trends and technology, producing magazines such as 110% Gaming for the younger video games market. They have also moved into digital technology, launching the world-leading online genealogy brand Findmypast, the first company to provide complete access to birth, marriage and death records for England and Wales. Findmypast is the lead of several online brands, with around 18 million registered users. The company still employs around 2,000 people today at its various premises across the UK.
